Not Every Shrub Job Is the Same Kind of Work
Homeowners often use trimming and pruning interchangeably, but the amount and purpose of cutting can be very different.

Flowering Shrubs Should Not All Be Trimmed on the Same Schedule
Some shrubs flower on wood produced the previous season. Trimming them at the wrong time can remove next season's flower buds.
Spring Flowering Shrubs
University of Illinois Extension recommends pruning many spring flowering shrubs shortly after they finish blooming because those plants often set flower buds on older wood.

Shrubs that bloom on new growth are commonly pruned while dormant or before strong spring growth begins, depending on the species.

Sometimes the Better Decision Is to Leave More Plant Material
Cutting harder is not automatically better. If the requested result risks damaging the plant or stripping away most of its live foliage, I want that clear before the work starts.
Flower Buds Are About to Open
If a flowering shrub is close to blooming, aggressive trimming may remove the display you were expecting.
The Hedge Is Bare Inside
Some overgrown hedges have green growth only on the outer shell. Cutting too far back can expose bare wood that may not fill in quickly.
The Requested Height Is Too Low
I will not assume a hedge can safely be cut to any height simply because it is taller than you want.
The Plant Is Already Stressed
Drought stress, winter injury, disease symptoms, or dieback can change whether routine trimming makes sense.
It Requires Major Structural Pruning
If the job requires removing large woody stems or rebuilding the shrub's framework, that is more than routine hedge trimming.
It Is Really Tree Work
Branches that have developed into substantial tree limbs are outside my normal shrub and hedge trimming service.
A Hedge Should Not Be Wider at the Top Than at the Bottom
When practical for the plant and existing shape, I avoid creating a top heavy hedge that shades its own lower growth.
Keep Light Reaching Lower Foliage
University of Illinois Extension recommends keeping formal hedges slightly wider at the base than the top so sunlight can reach lower branches.

Existing Shape Still Matters
If a hedge has been allowed to become top heavy or extremely overgrown, one normal trimming visit may not safely transform it into a perfect formal hedge.
