If your beds are already clean and ready, I can move directly into the mulch installation. If they need work first, I quote that preparation separately.
Weed Removal
Heavy or widespread weed removal is not included in the $120 per yard mulch rate.
Leaf and Debris Cleanup
If beds are full of leaves, sticks, or other material that must be removed before spreading mulch, that cleanup is priced separately.
Old Mulch Removal
Existing mulch does not automatically need to be removed. If it is excessively deep, matted, or causing the finished grade to be too high, removal can be quoted separately.
Edging
Cutting or redefining bed edges is separate from the mulch installation price.
Bed Reconstruction
Changing the shape of beds, removing large amounts of soil, or rebuilding the landscape area is a different scope of work.
Ready Beds Cost Less to Prepare
If the bed is already weeded, cleaned, and edged the way you want it, the project stays focused on mulch delivery and installation.
Do You Need to Remove the Old Mulch First?
Usually not. The important question is how much mulch is already there and whether adding more would make the finished layer too deep.
Old Mulch Can Often Stay
If the existing mulch has broken down and the total depth will remain appropriate, I can usually install a fresh layer over it.
That avoids unnecessary removal, hauling, and cost.
Removal May Be Needed When
- The existing layer is already too deep
- Mulch is piled against trunks or stems
- The material is heavily matted
- The bed height is too close to sidewalks or edging
- You are correcting an old installation problem

More Mulch Is Not Better
For many shrub and tree beds, a finished mulch depth around 2 to 3 inches is a practical target. Perennial crowns may need less material around them.

You Do Not Need a New Heavy Layer Every Year
Fresh mulch is useful when the existing layer has thinned or broken down. It is not useful to keep stacking new material on top of an already deep bed.

No Tree Removal
Tree removal, stump removal, and major woody debris are not part of mulch installation.
