Regular mowing clippings break down quickly and are not the main cause of thatch buildup when the lawn is mowed properly.
Consider Soil Compaction
Compaction can contribute to poor soil conditions and thatch problems. In some lawns, core aeration addresses the underlying issue more directly.
Consider Lawn Recovery
Mechanical dethatching is disruptive. I want the turf actively growing and able to recover rather than tearing into a stressed lawn at the wrong time.

Overwatering, excessive nitrogen, poor soil conditions, compaction, and other factors can contribute to buildup. Removing thatch without correcting the cause may only provide a temporary reset.
Why Dethatching Needs a Property Specific Decision in Lake Forest

Both can improve a lawn when used correctly, but they are not interchangeable services.
Dethatching
Dethatching mechanically removes excessive organic buildup near the soil surface. It is the more disruptive option and may expose soil and thin the turf enough that overseeding becomes appropriate afterward.
Core Aeration
Core aeration removes plugs of soil to reduce the effects of compaction and improve root zone conditions. It can also help manage thatch by bringing soil and microorganisms to the surface.

When Should a Lake Forest Lawn Be Dethatched?
