Compaction happens when soil particles are pressed closer together and pore space is reduced. That can limit root growth, air exchange, and water movement through the soil.
Core aeration is designed to address compaction, but I would not recommend it only because the lawn looks thin. Shade, thatch, water problems, and mowing stress can create similar symptoms.
What Compacted Turf Often Looks and Feels Like
No single symptom proves compaction, but several together make it more likely.
Hard soil when moist
A screwdriver or soil probe that is unusually difficult to push into moist soil can be a practical warning sign.
High traffic routes
Play areas, walking paths, mower routes, and regularly used turf compact faster.
Shallow rooting
Grass may struggle to develop deeper roots when soil pore space is limited.
Slow infiltration
Water can enter compacted soil more slowly, although standing water can also come from grading or drainage problems.
Thin turf in used areas
Wear combined with compaction can reduce turf density.
Heavy soil behavior
Fine textured soils can compact more readily when trafficked while wet.
Compaction Usually Comes From Pressure Plus Soil Conditions
Foot traffic, repeated equipment passes, construction activity, and working soil while it is too wet can all contribute to compaction.
This is why I also care about soil moisture before aerating. Slightly moist soil can core well, but saturated soil can rut or smear under equipment.

Aeration removes plugs from the turf and creates physical openings in the compacted surface layer.
Use core aeration
Choose equipment that removes soil cores rather than only pressing spikes into the ground.
Time it during active growth
Early fall is a strong window for cool season lawns.
Water very dry soil first
Moderately moist soil can improve core penetration.
Do not aerate saturated turf
Wait until the surface firms up enough to avoid rutting.
Add seed only if thin
Compaction and low turf density are related but separate decisions.
Do not call drainage compaction
Persistent standing water can require grading or drainage work beyond aeration.
